Two kingdoms

I’m excited about the role of the believer and prayer in advancing the kingdom of God.

From my reading of scripture, I am a warrior working under God’s direction to push back the boundaries of Satan’s kingdom.

The apostle Paul says we have been “rescued . . . from the dominion of darkness and brought . . . into the kingdom of the Son.” (Colossians 1:13)

That tells me that there are two kingdoms at war in this world – the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Son.  As believers, we are in the kingdom of the Son,  Jesus Christ.

In essence, God is already the victor.  He cast Satan out of heaven as we learn in Luke 10:18.  And Christ defeated death and Satan on the cross, freeing us as believers from Satan’s power.

Yet Satan remains the “prince of this world” (John 12: 31).  He is still active and has control over many who are in darkness.  The final destruction of Satan is yet to come.

Until Satan is finally destroyed, we have work to do to advance the kingdom of the Son in this world.

Recently, I have been exploring these things and learning more about the two kingdoms and my role as a believer.  What I have read expands my view of the importance of prayer.

The great thing is that I don’t need to be afraid of Satan.  I am a son of God.  I am in Christ and Christ is in me.  I am free of the power of Satan.

As the apostle John says, “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)  James says: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

In resisting the devil, I need to remember that it is not me that is resisting – it is Christ within me.  Satan doesn’t care about me, but he is frightened by Christ.

So, how do I battle Satan?  I do it through faith in Christ.

As Paul says in Galatians 2: 20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

I must step out in faith that Christ is within me and that he will defeat Satan through me.

In my view, we are advancing the kingdom of God and driving Satan back when friends and neighbours give their lives to Jesus Christ.

We are forcing Satan to retreat when God works through us to bring spiritual, emotional and physical healing to people who are hurting.

We are delivering a major blow to Satan when we bring reconciliation between warring spouses or friends or nations.

We are thwarting Satan’s plans when we yield ourselves to Christ and accept his leadership and lordship in our lives.

The great passage in Ephesians 6:10-18 makes clear that our major battle is with Satan and his forces.  And it concludes by urging us to continually pray through the Spirit.

For me, this is a call to join with God in a righteous war.
